If you’ve got a small playroom space, this post is for you! I’m always looking for playroom ideas for small spaces. Our space can’t fit the large toy shelves or an excessive amount of toys. I wanted our playroom design to utilize the space we do have, and an indoor climbing wall was the perfect way to do it!
Small Playroom Ideas
If you have a small playroom then adding a vertical climbing wall is a great way to utilize your play space! We wanted to make sure it was extremely durable so we got our indoor climbing wall equipment from Tree Frog Playrooms (discount code: RYLEE10) where you can customize your panels by size and color. I got the natural wooden panels, but after hanging them up I decided I wanted them to be white. After I added three coats of white primer (or you could just buy the white panels like I wish I had done) I was ready to add my fun design!
Kids Room Murals
This is the second time I have created a kids room mural and instead of just free-handing it like I did the first time, I decided to take a photo of my playroom where I was going to add the design, insert that design into my procreate app on my iPad and then draw up my design so that I could easily resize and adjust my drawings prior to adding them to the wall.
My initial idea was to use a projector to then trace my design onto the wall. I ended up not having the right project and couldn’t trace it, but having the design image prior to sketching on the wall still added the frame of reference I needed for size and space.

Bright Playroom Colors
After I designed my image on my iPad I picked out my paint colors. I went to my local Ace Hardware store to pick out some Benjamin Moore Paint samples for all the fun colors I wanted to add to my wall. I ended up using 11 paint samples for my entire design. The cost for the paint samples was right around $100. I listed the colors I used below in the half pint size.
- 1284 Secret Garden
- 1282 Tippy Toes
- 816 Aqua Marina
- 815 Swiss Blue
- 1396 Heather Plum
- 153 Fresh Fruit
- 171 Sweet Butter
- 403 Candy Green
- 401 Sour Apple (didn’t use this one very much)
- OC-25 Cloud Cover
- Bohemian Black (from Lowe’s)
Wall Mural Supplies
When painting a wall mural you want to make sure you have some soft flexible brushes, painters tape, a paint tray, and some paint pens on hand. I linked some of my favorite paint supplies below.
- Paint Tray Roller Set
- Paint Tray Liners
- Canvas Drop Cloth
- Mini Paint Roller for larger illustrations
- Detailed Paint Brushes
- Paint Pens Got these paint pens in black and in white
Personalize your wall mural
This is where it gets extra special. Make it personalized to your kids by including some of their favorite things! My two year old was instantly pointing out all of the fun images on the wall and making the associated animal noises.
My 10 year old drew up a few of the designs (see if you can spot them!) such as the popsicle, butterfly, flag, soccer ball, and crayons. After I finished painting the crayons I added my four girls names to them as a special personalized touch. Each of my girls can find someway that they have contributed or some of their suggestions in the art which makes it extra special and a space they love to be.
Playroom Ideas: Organization
We may not be done quite yet (heck I’ve still got three more walls I have to figure out), but this space is coming together. Playroom organization is going to be key in your small playroom, but I’ve got you covered. I added some of our favorite organization containers for our toys here.
We also use the closet in this room to store and rotate our toys. I typically keep the closet locked so that the space doesn’t become over stimulating with too many toys and not enough space to engage in productive play. I’ll be adding a few hanging storage shelves to this space such as these fun acrylic cloud shelves.
